Lagoa: the official postcard

The famous lake in the centre of Joao Pessoa, located at the Solon de Lucena Park, is perhaps the most iconic image of the city, specially for its local inhabitants.

Popularly known as "lagoa" (lake in Portuguese), this part of the city is a very special reference point, because it links the old city to the coast through the Epitacio Pessoa Avenue.

At the lagoa everything is happening at the same time: there's a heavy traffic of vehicles, wandering vendors, all kinds of stores, restaurants, bakeries, banks, supermarkets, residential buildings, public service, green areas, schools... the lagoa is the very definition of city centre.

It's also there where the golden trumpet trees are concentrated. Every Summer these trees blossom in stunning yellow tones, which attracts many amateur and professional photographers.

The local inhabitants also look forward to seeing the Christmas decoration at the lagoa, which sometimes divides the opinion of the population.

Despite the fact that the lagoa is located at a park, one could hardly say people go there to relax and enjoy a calm afternoon, the area is way too busy and loud for that. Back in 1940, when the landscape architect Burle Marx planned the Solon de Lucena Park, he couldn't foresee how the commerce would develop and consequently increase the traffic around the lake.

However, the lagoa stays a beautiful place even amidst the urban chaos. Even people who daily frequent or drive by the lagoa don't get tired of its beauty, it's definitely worth many photos!
